FRIDAY NIGHT’S PRESENTATION

“Learning From the Past: Examining How Historic Hydroclimate
Impacts Current Songbird Abundance in Southern Appalachia”

Heather Abernathy
Masters Student
Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources
The University of Georgia

Heather Abernathy earned her B.S. from The University of Georgia and has worked on diseases in feeder birds in urban areas in North Georgia, Neotropical migrant songbirds on the Georgia

Coast, and breeding songbirds in the southern Appalachians. Her master’s research focuses on examining the drivers of habitat selection in Neotropical migrant songbirds over a gradient of hydroclim

ate, in particular focusing on how variables such as habitat structure, microclimate, and food resources play a role in occupancy and abundance of these birds. This project has been funded by the H. Branch Howe, Jr. Grant as well as other local funding sources. Her project is part of a larger collaboration with a National Science Foundation Long-term Ecological Research Site, Coweeta LTER Site, which aims to address questions associated with climate change and landscape modification; specifically, their aim is to quantify how these variables will impact the biodiversity and productivity of the montane deciduous forest biome.
