The Georgia
Ornithological Society's (GOS) mission is to encourage the scientific study
of birds by gathering and disseminating information on Georgia bird life.
GOS actively promotes bird conservation by encouraging the preservation of
habitats that are vital to the survival of resident and migratory birds. The
GOS also gives scholarships, produces scientific publications, and provides
fellowship among those interested in nature.

The GOS was founded in Atlanta in 1936, with Roger
Tory Peterson, who happened to be in Atlanta for a talk for the Atlanta Bird Club, in
attendance. From the beginning, the GOS provided for both recreational and
scientific birding, with the quarterly publication, the GOShawk as the newsletter
and The Oriole as the scientific ornithological journal. Two meetings were held
each year in various parts of Georgia, with a weekend of birding, fellowship and the
reading of scientific papers. Over a dozen occasional papers were published through the years,
together with bird lists and The Birder's Guide to Georgia (current revision is
number thirteen). As members began to see bird habitat destroyed, they began to take more
interest in the preservation of bird habitat and the protection of rare and endangered
species. They also began providing scholarships for bird study. TOP
