Eric Beohm discovered a YELLOW-BILLED LOON on Lake Horton, Fayette Co., this morning, in the company of a COMMON LOON. The bird was observed again later in the day by Michael Beohm. Directions: From Fayetteville, take GA 85/GA 92 south, staying on GA 92 when it splits (left hand turn) from GA 85. Take a right onto Antioch Rd. Denny and Pam McClure report seeing a light morph adult ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at around 3:30pm in a power line cut/pasture area off of GA 166 in Carroll Co., just inside the Carroll/Douglas Co. line. The bird was not seen later in the day when they returned to the area. [DeLorme: p. 25, grid D-7]

Steve Slaton reports seeing a COMMON MOORHEN at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center, Jasper Co. on Saturday. The bird was seen on Fox Lake. From Atlanta, head east on I-20 to exit 98 (GA 11). Head south on GA 11 and watch for the sign for the Wildlife Center after you pass through Mansfield. [DeLorme: p. 27, grid F-9]

Steve and others also report seeing the family of BARN OWLS (an adult and four young) on the square in Monroe, Walton Co.

Today, Lois Stacey reports a female or eclipse male CANVASBACK, a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER, and three GREATER YELLOWLEGS at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park in Augusta. [DeLorme: p. 31, grid G-7]

Today, Carol Lambert, Jeff Sewell and Dan Vickers observed the ROSS’S GOOSE at Lake Horton, as well as a possible Snow Goose, two CANVASBACKS, two COMMON LOONS and the AMERICAN WIGEON, but no Common Goldeneye, Greater Scaup or Bald Eagle. SANDHILL CRANES are still being reported in good numbers heading south through the Atlanta area. Two small flocks were reported in Bartow Co. on Saturday by Helen Dezell, and a larger flock was reported by Eric Beohm at Lake Horton.

One NORTHERN PINTAIL and an EARED GREBE continue to be seen at EL Huie Land Application Facility, both seen today by Carol Lambert, Jeff Sewell and Dan Vickers. The ROSS’S GOOSE in northern Forsyth Co. discovered by Andy Kinsey was observed by Stewart Arey. Stewart provides the following refinement to the directions [DeLorme: p. 21, grid C-6]:
1) Take GA 400 North to the first traffic light past exit 17 (Hwy 369).
2) Turn left (west) and travel about 1 mile to the first traffic light.
3) Turn right (north) and travel about 0.2 miles to Coal Mt. Drive on your left immediately past the cemetery.
4) Turn left on Coal Mountain Dr.
5) You will see the pond on your right.

Giff Beaton, Jim Flynn, Malcolm Hodges and Earl Horn reported seeing the following species during a Big Day attempt on Monday: 6 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE in Burke Co.; 150 BLACK SCOTERS, 15 SURF SCOTERS, 2 RED-THROATED LOONS, 1 POMARINE JAEGER and 4 PARASITIC JAEGERS off of the north picnic area near Villas by the Sea on Jekyll Island; 1 PARASITIC JAEGER off of the boardwalk at the Soccer Complex on Jekyll Island; and 1 WHIP-POOR-WILL on the south end of Jekyll Island.  Details are available in the GABO-L Archives.

Lynn Schlup reports more than 50 PURPLE FINCHES visiting her feeders in Oconee Co., as well as two PINE SISKINS.  Details are available in the GABO-L Archives.

Carol Lambert and Jeff Sewell report that an immature male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD continues to visit their feeder in Tucker, GA.

A family of BARN OWLS was discovered in Monroe, Walton Co. Bobby Cox reports that there are at least two half-grown young in a nesting hole in a bid oak tree on the town square in Monroe. The best time to see these birds is at dusk.

There were several recent SANDHILL CRANE reports on Saturday: a flock of 18 south of Dahlonega, Lumpkin Co., by Iain Stephenson; a flock of 100 in south Cobb Co. by Pam Moore; and a flock 60 in west Cobb Co. by Victor Williams on Saturday. Details are available in the GABO-L Archives:

On Saturday, Tim Keyes reported 30 VESPER SPARROWS and 10 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center, Jasper Co. Most of these birds were seen at the south end of the property in fields at the north end of Heron Pond and Teal Pond. Maps are available at the Wildlife Center. A repeat of a previous report: Chris Lowdermilk reports that there may be a Ross’s Goose at a pond along GA 166 in Douglas Co. The bird was far off of the road, so a scope is necessary to look for this bird. Directions: Take I-20 to Exit 36 (Chapel Hill Rd.); head south on Chapel Hill Rd. until it dead-ends at GA 166. Turn right on GA 166 and proceed approximately 2 miles until you see a farm pond on the left. [DeLorme: p. 25, grid D-9]

There have been no recent reports (positive or negative) concerning the male Calliope Hummingbird in Decatur.

Mark Davis reports today that a NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL and WOOD DUCKS were seen today in the flooded field behind the restrooms at the Cochran Shoals Unit of the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area, located just outside of I-285 on the northwest side of Atlanta. Also yesterday, Eric Beohm reported a flock of at least 7 ROSS’S GEESE at Lake Horton, Fayette Co. The birds were observed on the island toward the right side of the lake as you are standing on Antioch Rd. facing the lake. Also observed were 4 GREATER SCAUP, 1 REDHEAD, 2 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, and 9 GREEN-WINGED TEAL. Pierre Howard located a remarkably late SWAINSON’S THRUSH on 12/13 on St. Catherines Island. Also, a REDDISH EGRET was found on the St. Catherines I. Christmas Bird Count.

Chris Lowdermilk reports that two REDHEAD, one COMMON GOLDENEYE, and two RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were observed at Sweetwater Creek SP, Douglas Co. on Sunday, as well as the SNOW GOOSE that was discovered in November, RUDDY DUCK, LESSER SCAUP, and HOODED MERGANSER. On Saturday, Chris observed ten REDHEAD, RING-BILLED GULLS and a BONAPARTE’S GULL at this location. On Friday, 12/12, Chris observed a NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW at Sweetwater Creek, a new state late date. [DeLorme: p. 25, grid B-10; Birding Georgia: p. 67]

Chris also reports that there may be a ROSS’S GOOSE at a pond along GA 166 in Douglas Co. The bird was far off of the road, so a scope is necessary to look for this bird. Huie, Jonesboro, GA; ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK sightings this winter; COMMON GOLDENEYE on Skidaway I.; WILSON’S WARBLER at Georgia Tech; and a couple of BALD EAGLE sightings, including one at E.L Huie.

An adult male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD has been coming to a feeder at the home of Patricia White and has been banded by Rusty Trump in Dekalb Co. You must email Patricia prior to visiting her residence to look for the bird and to receive directions to her house. Her email address is patriciawhite AT mindspring.com. Rusty also banded an immature male BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD in Roswell, GA. The residents that are hosting this hummingbird have not granted permission yet for birders to see this bird. Details are available on the GABO-LISTSERV archives.


Carol Lambert reports that the EARED GREBE and the HORNED GREBE are still being seen at the E.L. Huie Land Application Facility. Carol also reports a white morph SNOW GOOSE at this location. Details are available on the GABO-LISTSERV archives.

There have been four recent reports of ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS coming to feeders around the state.

Robert Calhoun reports a BALD EAGLE in Toombs Co. along GA 152.

Carol Lambert received a second hand report that a BALD EAGLE has been seen for two days at Lake Blalock, Henry Co.
