A SANDERLING and a BLACK TERN were discovered at EL Huie Land Application Facility on Monday, in addition to the SEMIPALMATED and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS and BANK SWALLOW found there on Sunday. A MOURNING WARBLER was found on Kennesaw Mt. Thursday morning shortly before
8 am by Giff Beaton. The bird was heard singing on the left side of the road to the top of the mountain, just before stake #4. Giff later reported to GABO-L that Bob Zaremba had relocated the bird shortly before 10:30 near stake #5. [DeLorme: p. 20, grid G-1; Birding Georgia: p. 71]

On Friday, Walt Chambers reported a BLACK-NECKED STILT in a dredge pond north of the Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center, located off of Lumpkin Rd. on the south side of Columbus. [DeLorme: p. 40, grid E-2]

On Saturday, Jeff Sewell reported two SNOW GEESE at the E. L. Huie Land Application Facility ponds. A male and female NORTHERN PINTAIL continue in the big (southerly most) pond. 42 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 15 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 4 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 3 RING-NECKED DUCKS and a LESSER SCAUP were observed as well. Tom Striker reported 2 or 3 COMMON LOONS at Lake Blue Ridge on Sunday. [DeLorme: p. 14, Grid C-4]

Steve Barlow reported that the LEAST FLYCATCHER continues at the Zion Baptist Church along GA 180 near Suches, between mile marker 3 and 4. The bird was seen in the back of the church. He also observed a PINE SISKIN in front of Lenny’s Grill on GA 180 near mile marker 4. [DeLorme: p. 15, grid E-7]

Species seen during his hike: OVENBIRD, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER, VEERY, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, SCARLET TANAGER, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, and BROAD-WINGED HAWK.

A belated report from Denny and Pam McClure of a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER on the north side of Perry on May 4. The bird was seen in a pecan grove at the US 341 /Perry Bypass (?) intersection.

Denny and Pam also reported seeing an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER on May 9 at Callaway Gardens near the greenhouse, as well as an adult BALD EAGLE at Callaway Gardens. [DeLorme: p. 32, grid G-3]

Rene Heidt reported a NORTHERN GANNET on May 9, approximately 10 miles off the shore of Tybee I.

There have been several reports recently of WILLOW FLYCATCHERS along the Ingles parking lot on US 76 on the north side of Blairsville.

There have been no Willow Flycatchers observed yet this year along the Little Tennessee River near the Dillard House in Dillard, Rabun Co.

Chris Skelton reports that on May 11 he hiked to the top of Rabun Bald, Rabun Co., and reported seeing or hearing OVENBIRDS, WORM-EATING WARBLERS, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, WOOD THRUSHES, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, SCARLET TANAGERS and as many as five CANADA WARBLERS. Bob Zaremba reported that Chuck Saleeby found a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO at Kennesaw Mt. this morning near the maintenance area field adjacent to the parking lot. A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was discovered by Bob on Wednesday along the trail between Kennesaw Mt. and Little Kennesaw Mt. A male WILSON’S WARBLER was also seen today. The warbler was seen about one-tenth of the way up the mountain just above the fire road. [DeLorme: p. 20, grid G-1; Birding Georgia: p. 71]

Karen Theodorou reported a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON this morning, along the Richard Trice Trail (also known as the Suwannee Creek Greenway) on Martin Farm Rd., Suwannee, GA. Karen also reported many species of warblers, including PROTHONOTARY WARBLER along the trail. Directions: Take I-85 north out of Atlanta to the Lawrenceville-Suwannee Rd. Exit 111; turn left off of the exit toward Suwannee; proceed to Satellite Blvd. and turn left on Satellite Blvd.; go to the first road on the right, Martin Farm Rd.. There is a small parking area on the left just before you cross Suwannee Creek. A marshy area is located near the parking lot, which is where the night-heron was seen. [DeLorme: p. 21, grid F-6]

Two RED CROSSBILLS have been frequenting the feeders of Rod and Betsy Chamberlain. The Chamberlains live on Richard Moss Lane, which off of GA 60 near the Fannin/Union Co. line. Take the second graveled drive to the right after getting on Richard Moss Lane. The crossbills seem to prefer the feeder that is just to the left of the front of the house.
