The following is a summary of the Georgia Rare Bird Alert (RBA) Friday evening telephone report, June 25, 2004. The RBA is a service of the Georgia Ornithological Society. Jeff Sewell is the voice of the RBA.

A pelagic trip off Tybee Island, on Friday June 25th produced the following birds. 15 CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 2 AUDUBON'S SHEARWATERS, 1 BLACK-CAPPED PETREL, 2 BRIDLED TERNS and 1 SOOTY TERN. For more information see:

Immature WHITE IBIS were reported from a few locations in the Piedmont. Patricia Simms reported one from Snellville near Big Haynes Creek, Tim Keyes reported 9 at the Charlie Elliot Wildlife Center in Jasper County [DeLorme: p. 27, grid F-9], and Dan Roper had one at Arrowhead (Floyd County, GA) [DeLorme: p. 18, grid A-5; Birding Georgia: p. 29].

Surprisingly BLACKPOLL WARBLERS were found in a couple locations, Anne Waters reported one from a yard in Augusta and David Hedeen heard one in Grant Park in Atlanta.

Jeff Madsen observed a MISSISSIPPI KITE in Rockdale County on the
20th. Bill Lotz and Dan Vickers reported both SWALLOW-TAILED and
MISSISSIPPI KITES near Doctortown (North of Jesup) [DeLorme: p. 54, grid G-3; Birding Georgia: p. 164]. 5 SWALLOW-TAILED KITES were seen at Heritage Park off US HWY 301 and the Altamaha River, and 3 SWALLOW-TAILED KITES were seen at Griffin Ridge WMA.

Eugene Keferl reported 20 ROSEATE SPOONBILLS roosting at the pond along the causeway to Jekyll Island. He also found a SWALLOW-TAILED KITE over the 4-H Center and a GRAY KINGBIRD at the little shopping Center. [DeLorme: p. 63, grid G-8; Birding Georgia: p. 203] He also had 7 additional ROSEATE SPOONBILLS on the usual roost west of US 17 south of the Jekyll Island causeway entrance.

SCARLET TANAGERS were reported from a few places in the Georgia Piedmont. Michael Beohm reported one from Sprewell Bluff State Park [DeLorme: p. 33, grid F-7], and another one at a yard in western Monroe County. He also had TREE SWALLOWS at Big Lazar WMA in Talbot County [DeLorme: p. 33, grid G-7], and a pair of COMMON GROUND-DOVES in Lamar County near Barnesville Friday, and a few at his feeders in Thomaston.

The following is a summary of the Georgia Rare Bird Alert (RBA) Sunday evening telephone report, June 6, 2004. The RBA is a service of the Georgia Ornithological Society. Jeff Sewell is the voice of the RBA.

Patrick Brisse located a Limpkin at Lake Blalock near E.L. Huie Land Application Facility in Clayton/Henry Counties Sunday morning at 11:30AM. The bird was seen throughout the day. Patrick saw the bird near the little footbridge at the end of the Blalock parking lot by the powerline. Blalock is at the end of Shamrock Rd., off of Freeman Rd., near the Wetlands Center. There is a parking fee of $5.00 per car for anyone staying longer than 1 hr. The lakes are open 7am-8pm.  [DeLorme: p. 26, grid F-4; Birding Georgia: p. 85]

The WILSON'S PHALAROPE was not seen on Sunday. On Saturday the bird was found in Bartow County, at Brandon Farm Rd, S off 113 just E of Stilesboro (Delorme p19, E8). It was found in the pond in the angle of Brandon Frm and Taff Rds to the W of Brandon Fm Rd. Dickcissels and Grasshopper Sparrows were also found along this road. The Phalarope was resighted throughout the day.

Steve Barlow reported a WILSON'S PHALAROPE on Saturday. The bird was found in Bartow County, at Brandon Farm Rd, S off 113 just E of Stilesboro. It was found in the pond in the angle of Brandon Farm and Taff Rds to the W of Brandon Fm Rd. Dickcissels and Grasshopper Sparrows were also found along this road. The phalarope was resighted throughout the day.  [DeLorme: p. 19, grid E-8]

Marion Dobbs reported a LEAST BITTERN from Bartow County, found south along Hardin Bridge Rd. Directions to this site (the old Brandon Farm section of the old Sod Atlanta) are in Birding Georgia, p. 36.

Also on Saturday, Clarence Belger and Anne Waters saw a COMMON LOON in non-breeding plumage on the expressway pond in Merry Ponds. June 8 or 10th is the record late date for this species in the piedmont/coastal plain.  [DeLorme: p. 31, grid F-7; Birding Georgia: p. 122]

Sandy Pangle observed 6 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS on Highway
293 about 2 miles south of Cartersville on Friday June 4th. These birds were in a swampy area just south of the river on the west side of the road.
