Highlights of this report include BRANT, SNOW GOOSE, and PARASITIC and POMARINE
JAEGERS on Jekyll Island; SNOW GOOSE on Little Cumberland Island; BLACK RAIL at
Phinizy Swamp Nature Center; Augusta; and a couple of late migrants at the Merry
Brothers Brickyard Ponds, also in Augusta.
The two juvenile BRANT found this morning by Sterling Blanchard off of South
Beach Jekyll Island and a little later at the near-by soccer fields by Earl Horn
were seen by many observers throughout the day with a SNOW GOOSE at the latter
location until late this afternoon. Earl checked the fields around dusk and all
of the geese had departed, most likely heading to roost somewhere. [DeLorme: p.
63, grid H-7; Birding Georgia: p. 203]
Also at Jekyll Island today, Earl Horn reported a PARASITIC and POMARINE JAEGER
off of the old picnic area north of Villas by the Sea [DeLorme: p. 63, grid F-8;
Birding Georgia: p. 203]. He also observed two SNOW GEESE on Little Cumberland
Island, seen from Jekyll Island South Beach. All of these areas on Jekyll Island
are detailed in Giff Beaton’s Birding Georgia.
From the Augusta area, Eric Beohm reported via GABO that he and Michael Beohm
heard a BLACK RAIL at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park today. Directions to Phinizy
Swamp Nature Park: Take exit 196A off I-20 to the Bobby Jones Expressway
(I-520); take exit 10 (Doug Barnard Parkway/Bush Field Airport) off of I-520.
Turn right, toward airport. Travel just under 1 mile until you see the
Wastewater Treatment Plant on your left. Turn left just past the Plant onto Lock
& Dam Road. Travel just under ½ mile until you see a small house on the left.
Just past the house, look for the Phinizy Swamp Nature Park entrance sign on
your left. Turn left, drive 200 feet, parking area on left. According to Eric’s
email, from the parking lot, proceed across the bridge toward the new education
buildings and continue on the constructed wetland trail, take the first left,
maybe 100 yards, and continue down this loop of the trail. Listen for the rail
in the marshy wetland cells. [DeLorme: p. 31, grid G-7]
Eric also reported finding a couple of late migrants at the Merry Brothers
Brickyard Ponds. He and Michael found a male YELLOW WARBLER along Mining Haul
Rd. and three NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS at the Brickyard Ponds. There have
been several late reports of NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW in the state this
year. YELLOW WARBLERS are extremely rare this time of year as well, with only a
couple of recent winter records of 17 Jan 2000 in Atlanta and 20 Feb 2003 on
Skidaway Island. Merry Brothers Brickyard Ponds are detailed in Giff Beaton’s
Birding Georgia. [DeLorme: p. 31, grid F-7; Birding Georgia: p. 122]

Only one species will be highlighted on this report. Two juvenile BRANT were
observed off of the beach in the water near the wreck off of the South Beach of
Jekyll Island at 7:45 AM by Sterling Blanchard. The birds left the area after
about six or seven minutes, heading northerly. Just a little bit later, Earl
Horn independently found them feeding with a SNOW GOOSE on the soccer fields on
the southern end of Jekyll Island. I believe that this is the first report for
this species in Georgia since one was photographed on Jekyll Island in November
2000. [DeLorme: p. 63, grid H-7; Birding Georgia:

Highlights of this report include THAYER'S GULL at West Point Dam; PARASITIC
JAEGER, PURPLE SANDPIPER and a mystery gull (possibly a GLAUCOUS or GLAUCOUS x
HERRING GULL hybrid) on Tybee Island near Savannah; a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD
along the Andrews Island Causeway in Brunswick; BLACK-NECKED STILT and GLOSSY
IBIS at the Altamaha State Waterfowl Management Area near Darien; a nice count
of 22 WILSON'S PLOVERS at Jekyll Island; SURF and BLACK SCOTERS, WHIMBREL and
COMMON NIGHTHAWK at Jekyll Island; and a BARN OWL in Austell, Cobb Co.
Bill Lotz and Dan Vickers reported that the first year THAYER'S GULL appeared
again at West Point Dam this afternoon. Bill reported via GABO-L that the bird
spent most of its time roosting on a concrete all on the lower side of the dam.
[DeLorme: p. 24, grid E/F-2; Birding Georgia: p. 64]
Yesterday morning, Thursday, Steve Barlow reported a PARASITIC JAEGER off of
Tybee Island and a couple of PURPLE SANDPIPERS on the rocks near the Tybee
Lighthouse Beach. Steve also reported seeing a large gull resembling a GLAUCOUS
GULL on Tybee, but was not convinced that it could possibly have been a GLAUCOUS
x HERRING GULL hybrid, as lost referred to as a "Nelson's Gull." Steve tried to
locate the gull later morning and early afternoon, but the gull had departed.
[DeLorme: p. 39, grid B-10; Birding Georgia: p.
179]
Earl Horn, Bob Zaremba and Lex Glover had 4 PURPLE SANDPIPERS on Tybee Island
this morning.
Ellery McClintock called in a report of a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD along the
Andrews Island Causeway this morning at around 8 AM. Ellery did not leave any
other details concerning the bird.and this is a good place to remind everyone to
leave a number that they can be reached so that the RBA compiler can contact the
reporter in case additional information is needed.
[DeLorme: p. 63, grid F-7; Birding Georgia: p. 200]
Earl Horn, Bob Zaremba and Lex Glover located a BLACK-NECKED STILT at the
Altamaha State Waterfowl Management Area this morning. According to the latest
Annotated Checklist of Georgia Birds, published last year, this would be a new
late date for Georgia by 13 days. They also had 6 GLOSSY IBIS here. [DeLorme: p.
63, grid C-7; Birding Georgia: p. 192]
Earl also reports that he had 1 SURF SCOTER and 50 BLACK SCOTERS off of the
north end of Jekyll Island this morning, just north of Villas by the Sea.
Earl also had two WHIMBRELS behind the Jekyll Island Visitors Center and 3
COMMON NIGHTHAWKS this evening flying over South Beach Jekyll Island. The latter
would tie the fall departure late date for this species in Georgia.
Sterling Blanchard reported that he counted 22 WILSON'S PLOVERS along Jekyll
Island's South Beach this morning. That is a pretty nice count for this time of
year. [DeLorme: p. 63, grid H-7; Birding Georgia: p. 203]
Chris Loudermilk reported that a BARN OWL stopped in his yard this morning in
Austell. Chris was alerted to the presence of the bird by mobbing crows.
