A Red-necked Phalarope was seen in a little pond Tuesday, May 29 on Brandon Farm
Road near Taff Road in Bartow County, southwest of Cartersville.

A Wilson’s Plover was found Tuesday, May 29 at Carter’s Dam Reregulation Lake
(Murray County). A Semipalmated Plover was also seen in the area for comparison.

A pair of Red Crossbills was located on Monday, May 28 in southern Union County

County near Scaly, NC. A Red Breasted Nuthatch was also found in the area.
Northern Bobwhite found in a subdivision in Tucker (DeKalb County) near
Henderson Park.
Cedar Waxwings were seen carrying nesting material in Oconee county.

On Little Tybee Island (Glynn County) several good birds were seen on a boat

Top birds of the last week included:
Least tern and female Anhinga, as well as 6 Great Egrets at E.L. Huie Land
Application Facility.
Connecticut Warblers continue at the Observation Platform at Clyde Shepard
Nature Preserve in Dekalb, as well as at the Jones Bridge Unit Chattahootchee
National Recreation Area.
Yellow-crowned Night-Herons have been found in various locations around Atlanta,
including Clyde Shepard, Cochran Shoals Unit of Chattahoothee National
Recreation Area, and 4 in a marsh on Clifton Springs Road (a right off of Flat
Shoals Road). Park at the office building just past the marsh, which is on both
sides of the road.
Many Mississippi kites have been seen in southeast Lamar County. An area that is
generally good to look for kites is south of Athens in Oconee County.
Black-necked stilt, glossy ibis and 30 Black-bellied Whistling Ducks at Altamaha
Wildlife Management Area.
Sedge Wren and Sora in Murray County in the Piedmont – late date for both
species, which are both unusual in the piedmont.
A Gray Kingbird has returned to the area of the Thunderbird Inn on Oglethorpe
Avenue near downtown Savannah.

Georgia RBA Sunday, May 20, 2007

Least Flycatchers have been reported by numerous observers in the mountains,
mostly in Rabun County. Two locations are along Anglin Road in Suches,
Union County and along Hale Ridge Road in Rabun County (Delorme page 16, grid
B4).
Willow flycatchers have been reported in a few places, including in Dillard,
Rabun County, near the Little Tennessee River (a site which also hosted Bank
Swallows and Yellow Warblers.) A very reliable location for this species in
Georgia is the Ingles Shopping Center in Blairsville on Hwy 76.
Red-Breasted Nuthatches were seen at Burrells Ford Road in Rabun County
Ivy Log Gap Road (Forest Service Road 100) in Union County (DeLorme page 16,
grid B7) – often has over 20 species of warblers this time of year, and has been
active recently, even as migration tails off. Nearby, 2 Cerulean Warblers were
seen on Gum Log Gap Road (forest service road 95). Travel 5.6 miles from Ivy Log
Gap. Turn right on 334. Turn onto forest service road 95.
A Common Raven was reported at Brasstown Bald, Union County
At least one Connecticut Warbler (possibly 2) has been seen and observed all
weekend at Clyde Shepard in Dekalb County all weekend long, as well as one in
Ringgold
6 White rumped Sandpipers have been at the west pond of E.L. Huie Land
Application Pond the west pond (Jonesboro on Clayton County) for 2 weeks. Nearly
all the waterfowl have left, and most of the shorebirds there last week are also
gone.

3 Willow flycatchers have returned again this year to the Ingles Shopping Center
in Blairsville (Union County). This is the most reliable place in GA for the
birds. The shopping center is on US Hwy 76 a little east of US 19/129. The birds
are in the willows along the creek.

Bachman’s Sparrow and Red -Cockaded Woodpecker were found on Barron Russell Road
(Jones County) in Piedmont NWR on May 12. Take Hwy 18 out of Forsyth, just
before the Nongame Dept of DNR turn onto Barron Russell Road. The Sparrows were
seen near the beginning of road; the Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers were seen near the
end of the road.

The Alder Flycatcher was not seen at Ivey Manor Subdivision Preserve in Cummings

The Connecticut Warbler was relocated at Cochran Shoals Unit of the

Another Connecticut Warbler was seen Wednesday, May 9 on in SW Atlanta on the
bike trail between Lewis and Flamingo Drive. The bird was seen on the bike trail
where it meets sewer line. 15 other species of warbler were seen in this area.
An Alder Flycatcher was located at the Ivey Manor Subdivision Preserve, Cumming
(Forsyth County). It was first heard May 5, 2007. It was confirmed today by
sight and sound. Also a male Wilson’s Warbler seen there on May 9, 2007.

An immature male or female White-winged Scoter was reported from E.L. Huie Land
Application Facility (Clayton County). It was first reported Saturday, May 5.

Also found at EL Huie on Sunday May 6 were 4 White-rumped Sandpipers in the

The Caspian Tern found at EL Huie on Sunday, May 6 was not found on Monday, May
7.
A Yellow-headed Blackbird was seen Sunday, May 6 at the Cochran Shoals Unit of
Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (Cobb County) on the south side of
the unit. Trail on bench, into woods near wetlands. From the Interstate North
Parkway parking lot, take the trail to the bathrooms. Cross over a creek, before
the bench on the left go into the woods
toward a low marshy area. The bird was seen there near a beaver dam.
A female Connecticut Warbler was also found at Cochran Shoals. It was heard
Saturday and Sunday and finally seen on Monday on the Philadelphia Vireo trail.

Georgia RBA Saturday night May 5, 2007

Top birds of the last week that may still be around include:
White-winged Scoter, Dickcissel, Connecticut Warbler, Henslow’s Sparrow,
Wilson’s Warbler and Scissor-tailed Flycatcher.
Top species that have apparently left include Green Violet Ear, Surf Scoter,
Yellow-headed Blackbird, Zone-tailed Hawk.
There are also many reports of Bobolinks, and shorebirds from across the state.
A Connecticut Warbler, or possibly 2, was heard at the Cochran Shoals Unit of
Chattahoochee National River in Cobb County on Saturday morning.
A Henslow’s Sparrow was found at Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve off Harrington
Drive in DeKalb County. Many other birds were observed there including
Swainson’s Warbler, Louisiana Waterthrush, Gray-cheeked Thrush, Veery and a
number of warblers.
A Green Violet-Ear, which may be the 2nd Georgia record, was spotted and
reportedly well-photographed at a feeder. The location of this one-day wonder
was not reported. Please keep your eyes open as it may show up anywhere.
The White-winged Scoter was spotted Saturday on one of the ponds at E.L. Huie
Land Application Facility. A Dickcissel was spotted at a power line right-of-way
on the north side of ponds. There have also been sightings of a few Bobolinks.
The Yellow-headed Blackbird there has not been reported since Monday.
There have been a few reports of Scissor-tailed Flycatcher. One seen at Jekyl
Island has not been reported since April 30. A male has been seen at the same
location on Kingsville Road in McDonough location as a pair was reported much of
2006.
A handful of Anhinga reports from north of their normal range included a bird in
Dalton. Another was at Dawson Forest at the Old Reservoir on May 1.
Bobolinks have been reported in higher than typical numbers around the piedmont
– Bartow County, Lamar County and others. Either this is a good year for them,
or reporting is up.
Two recent visits to Kennesaw Mountain each yielded 24 species of warblers,
including a female Wilson’s. 24 species of warbler, along with other migrants,
were also reported by one observer at the Georgia International Horse Park in
Conyers, Rockdale County.
A great place to look for shorebirds is a Protein plant in Forsyth off GA 306. A
recent trip turned up 7 species of shorebirds, including a White-rumped
Sandpiper and 5 Short-billed Dowitchers. This is private property. Birders are
allowed to visit, but nobody may take pictures. All visitors should expect
security to approach. Just tell them you are birding. N on I-285 to right on GA
306 (Keith Bridge Road) towards Gainsville past GA 369 left at American Protein
sign. Follow back to pond. Page 21 grid C-6 in DeLorme.
Another active shorebird location is the Taff Road cattle farm south of GA 113
SW Cartersville On Thursday several species of sandpipers were seen including
Western Sandpipers.
The Merry Brothers Brickyard Pond has been good lately with reports today of
Black Tern, 2 Forster’s Terns and a Bonaparte’s Gull. A Caspian Tern was seen
there on April 27.
In Augusta Saturday observers reported an American Bittern, both night herons
and all 6 expected swallow species.
Many Yellow Warblers were reported from Arrowhead Environmental Nature Center in
Rome, Floyd County.
Older reports include:
Surf Scoter Spalding Reservoir New Salem Road north of Griffin, Spalding County
on May 1.
Zone-tailed Hawk in Spalding. Not seen since original report.
Lots of Mississippi Kites and Scissor-tailed Kites have been reported around the
state, including several of each at a previously reported location in Tatnall
County
A record number of Kentucky Warblers was reported from Standing Boy north of
Columbus in Musckogee County on Friday night.
The Georgia Tech Cabins was an unusual location for Gray-cheeked Thrush at
Georgia Tech cabins.
