BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCKS were again reported from Phinizy Swamp Nature Park in Augusta.

On July 7, two GULL-BILLED TERNS and one LAUGHING GULL were reported from Lake Walter F. Georgia, near the dam. Gull-billed Terns are rare inland (and Laughing Gull uncommon), and are usually seen in relation to a significant weather event; this was not the case for these sightings.

Only July 8, a juvenile YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was reported from southern Murray County at a wetland that is located in DeLorme pg. 13, F-8. It is on Hwy 225, 2.5 miles north of the intersection of Hwy 225 and Hwy 136. It is just past the Higher Praise Church of God on the right. There's a pull-off after the swamp, please be careful walking the roadside. This is a rare report of this species for the mountains.

An ANHINGA was reported on July 7 from Walton County, another report of this species for the Piedmont Region, which has been showing up more often in the Piedmont in recent years. It was in a small lake southwest of Monroe. The "lake" is mostly a wide area full of snags along Little Flat Creek where it is crossed by Liberty Hill Church Rd. This is the road that runs between Nunnally Farm Rd and H D Atha Rd south of GA 138. (Delorme p27, B9. The lake is not shown in DeLorme). In the same report, nesting OSPREY were reported from Lake Varner along the Newton-Walton County line.

From Clarke County on July 7, a report of CEDAR WAXWINGS. It is strange that Cedar Waxwings would be reported from such a southerly local on this date. [Transcriber note: this is one of several reports this year of Cedar Waxwing well south of their "regular" nesting areas in the mountains]

An adult BALD EAGLE was reported from Lake Hartwell. The observer mentioned that it was the first he had seen in the area, though the species may have been recorded nesting there historically.

A ROSS' GOOSE was found in Forsyth County on Riley Rd, DeLorme pg. 20 B-5 in the lower right-hand corner of that grid. Parking is difficult and it is a busy road, so be careful. The bird was seen with some CANADA GEESE.

BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCKS were seen at the Altamaha Waterfowl Management Area on the east side of US Hwy 17 (4 birds), and the west side as well (16 birds). These birds have been reported here for over a year now and are probably nesting. No direct evidence of nesting has yet been recorded at AWMA, so if you see ducklings later this summer or (even
better) happen to witness a bird entering a nest hole in a tree or a nest box, please report to GABO-L, the RBA, or GOS.

GRAY KINGBIRD was not seen at the usual spot at the convention center on Jekyll Island, but two were found at a new spot in the Winn Dixie parking lot off of US 17, this is just SW of its intersection with the J.F. Torras Causeway out to St. Simons Island. [Transcriber note – a Gray Kingbird was also seen only 5 blocks south of here at the intersection of US 17 and Gloucester St on 6/19, and may be from the same pair].
