A Black-headed Grosbeak (a male in winter plumage) has reappeared at a feeder in
Dunwoody, DeKalb Co, after an absence of over a week since it was last seen.
Word was slow to get out about this very, very rare western visitor to Georgia.
It was first seen in mid-January, but the homeowner did not realize for some
days what he had. After some research, he took some photos and sent them to the
owner of a bird store where he shops. The owner in turn sent them to a birder he
knows who identified the bird and, eventually, word got to me. We have
permission from the homeowners to visit their yard but they are concerned about
the numbers of people who might show up, so if you want to go look for it email
lambertsewell@mindspring.com or leave a message on the RBA phone number with
your phone numberto arrange a visit through Jeff Sewell. The best time to look
for it seems to be in the afternoon. Today it was seen only for 5 minutes at
3:30pm.
