Tricolored Heron - Transcript

In northwestern Georgia a TRICOLORED HERON was seen at the Arrowhead
Environmental Education Center lakes in Floyd County on 7/26-27, and
then again on the 29th.
On 7/24 20+ SWALLOW-TAILED KITES were observed in Long County.
A 7/30 Georgia Birders Online (GABO-L) post detailed results of the
last 2 aerial surveys flown by GA DNR this week to document status
of Georgia's roosting SWALLOW-TAILED KITE population, included were
locations where the kites might currently be seen.
9 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were found at the Marshallville Super Sod Farm
in Macon County on 7/23.
A SANDERLING was found at the Clayton County Water Authority's E.L.
Huie Land Application Facility ponds on 7/23, the bird continued at
Huie through the 25th. Many waders were also seen.
On 7/24 at the Pine Chapel Road ponds in Gordon County a STILT
SANDPIPER was observed. The bird was not relocated the next morning.
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was seen over downtown Donalsonville in Seminole
County on 7/28.

The compiler noted that fall shorebird migration is really picking
up, a report came in on 7/21 of 17 shorebird species on Little St.
Simons Island in Glynn County on the Georgia coast.
5 OSPREYS and 3 COMMON MOORHENS were seen at the E.L. Huie Land
Application Facility ponds in Clayton County on 7/17. Common, but
early, migrating shorebirds were seen there as well.
On 7/16 and 7/17 post-breeding dispersal of SWALLOW-TAILED KITES in
Georgia was evidenced by sightings in Richmond County in the Augusta
area.
Also, an important post came out this week detailing results from
aerial survey work done along parts of corridors of the Satilla,
Altamaha, Ogeechee, and Savannah Rivers to document the current
roosting status of Georgia's SWALLOW-TAILED KITE population. Two
more aerial surveys will be flown next week, stay tuned to Georgia
Birders Online for possible results of those flights as well.
At the Marshallville Super Sod Farm in Macon County 10 early UPLAND
SANDPIPERS were seen 7/17 and 6 were seen, probably relocated, at
the same site on 7/18 and by the same observer.
On 7/21 an early adult LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER was found at the
American Proteins ponds in Forsyth County.
A very similar dowitcher was found on 7/18 at the Etowah Indian
Mounds Sod Farm on the Bartow County Loop but not positively
identified to species.
On 7/21 a male WILSON'S PHALAROPE was found at the Pine Chapel Road
ponds in Gordon County.
Two CASPIAN TERNS were seen from the Hwy 136 bridge area at the
Carters Reregulation Lake in Murray County on 7/20.
On 7/14 a breeding plumaged male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was found on
Cashes Valley Road in western Fannin County at a very low elevation
of 1900 feet.
A male PAINTED BUNTING has been reported in Buford in Gwinnett
County since May 21st, and the bird was reported again on 7/18. A
possible female was also seen, denoting a possible breeding pair.
This pair would be the northernmost breeding pair on record for
Georgia if verified.

It was noted by the compiler that post-breeding dispersal is now
being reported. There have been two releases of captured, cleaned, relocated, and rehabilitated BROWN PELICANS conducted in the Brunswick area in Glynn County. These birds are victims of the ongoing BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Recent sighting and banding information, as well as the Brunswick area release details for these birds can be read in the following posts. It is requested that sightings of these birds be reported to the Georgia RBA with as much information as possible (time, location, and banding information), and that they also be reported according to any additional instructions in the posts.

On 6/21 1 SWALLOW-TAILED KITE and 1 MISSISSIPPI KITE were seen over
Watkinsville in Oconee County, and well into the Piedmont region of
Georgia, indicating post-breeding dispersal as well.
A flock of 13 MISSISSIPPI KITES was reported from Lamar County on
6/22.
2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS were seen in Canton in Cherokee County on
6/27. The compiler notes that fall shorebird migration will soon
start to begin in earnest.
On 6/20 and far into northwestern Georgia 3 inland CASPIAN TERNS
were found at Carter's Reregulation Lake in Murray County.
Also on 6/20 a female YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen at Memorial
Park in Athens in Clarke County.
On 6/19 in Rabun County 4 LEAST FLYCATCHERS and 2 PINE SISKINS were
observed.
Also in Rabun County, and on 6/27, 1 LEAST FLYCATCHER, 3
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, 1 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET and 3 PINE SISKINS
were found.
In the northern coastal plain, on 6/26, 1 PAINTED BUNTING was found
in Dooley County and 2 PAINTED BUNTINGS were found in Crisp County.
On 7/1 a DICKCISSEL was sighted at the Eufaula National Wildlife
Refuge (Bradley Unit) in Stewart County in far west central Georgia,
a possible first record for the refuge. |
