On Friday, 8/20/2004, finding myself on the south side after dropping someone at the airport, I decided to give E. L. Huie and the Newman Wetlands Center a try. At E. L. Huie there were four adult Black Terns working the surface of the big south pond. One was still pretty much in breeding plumage. One of the Snowy egrets on the pump station pond was attempting to feed like a tern by skimming along the surface and trying to grab lunch on the fly. I've witnesssed this behavior previously at Sanibel. At the Newman Wetlands Center there was a lone medium sized gray bird perched at the top of a tall snag. Another Black Tern??? No, a Mississippi Kite! I watched it for 15 minutes as it regurgitated what I presumed to be indigestible parts of insects. I took a bunch of digital images through the scope. They are all pretty blurry, unfortunately. |
