I received a report of Swallow tailed Kites being seen on Friday and Saturday morning (8/6-7/2004) and went and saw seven of the kites this morning. They were perched in a dead tree sleeping, resting and preening. This was from about 8:00 until 9:40, when they all started circling us, then drifted to the East gaining altitude. It was so neat to see them rising in the thermal without moving a wing. We saw them almost two hours. We could stand right under the tree they were in without disturbing them, taking lots of great photos. Friday morning, the owner reported five of them and Saturday morning, eleven of them. They are being seen from 7:00 until about 10:00. They were seen at Harvest Moon Farms, a private Horse Ranch Located off GA254 about 3 miles east of US129 in White County South of Cleveland (DeLorme P15 G9). Several Swallow-tailed Kites were spotted a couple miles from here exactly 1 year ago (Delorme P15 H9). We returned on Monday, 8/9, but were unable to locate the kites. However, several were seen flying over the ranch Sunday evening by the owner Jennifer Parson and sporadically until at least through Friday, 8/20. |
