A rather rare visitor to the immediate Georgia coast, 2 juvenile American Golden-Plovers were found by Patrick and Doris Leary on 11 September 2005 during a shorebird/banded bird survey.

The two birds were sighted independently on Cumberland Island's southernmost river shore (directly opposite Amelia Island, FL) This location has functioned as a traditional shorebird roost for many decades and attracts and supports multiple species and numbers of shorebirds, waders, larids and raptors.  Unfortunately, its location requires a very long walk from the public ferry  landings on Cumberland's west shore; consequently, few birders visit the site.
