Truly a special bird whenever it is found in its expected haunts along the Georgia coast during spring and fall migration, finding this species inland in Georgia is a real treat.

These two birds were first located on an Atlanta Audubon Field Trip on 27 Sep 2003.  Word quickly spread of their presence, and many Atlanta metro birders were able to study these two avocets over the next two weeks, at least up until 10 Oct 2003 when they were last reported.

This is the first record for American Avocet at the heavily birded El Huie Land Application Facility ponds, and the second record for the species in the Atlanta area during the fall migration season of 2003.  Six avocets were found by Bruce Dralle and Traci Brown and photographed by Bob Zaremba near Cartersville, Bartow Co., on 2 Aug 2003.
