The Black-billed Cuckoo is a low profile and rare
spring and fall migrant throughout the state. This particular bird was
found near the parking of Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park on 30
September 2003 by Pierre Howard and Chuck Saleeby. Pierre noted that he
patiently waited for 30 minutes until this bird came into camera range.
Note the color of the lower mandible of this bird
(almost entirely gray, not black), a variable characteristic of many individuals
of this species that is often not mentioned in field guides.
Remarkably, this bird stayed around the same area
for most of the day for other birders in the area to observe. Return to Species Account Menu
