This Black-chinned Hummingbird first appeared at the home of Buzz Trotti's residence around 4 January 2008 after a cold snap.  While the bird eluded two banding attempts by Karen Theordorou and Julia Elliott during the latter part of February, photos by Henry Finkbeiner captured some critical field marks, such as the distinctive shape of the outermost primary ("P10"), the long winged/short-tailed appearance, the rather dull metallic green back and the predominately gray crown, the combination of which help separate this species from the female and immature plumage of the closely related and very similar Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris).
